His teaching career includes four years with UVA’s Continuing Education Department as an instructor for studio art and art history. Tim served as chair of St. Anne’s Belfield School, Fine Arts Department, Charlottesville, Virginia 1984-1995. O’Kane is well known for his large narrative drawings and paintings, but also for his portraits and landscapes of Italy. His most recent works include paintings in both his Boxes and Still Life portfolios.
"Still-life affords the artist a compelling balance between geometry and illusion. Representational painting offers endless possibilities for distilling a contemplative order from the chaos of the world. My still life work stabilizes the present that is ever becoming my past. And so, the objects are collected and arranged, illuminated by the light of my studio window. The drawing is made, the colors gradually applied, tonalities adjusted toward warmth or coolness, details articulated, many seen only after extended observation. Days go by, weeks sometimes before it is done. In that time, it has become both an illusion and an object – a recollection and an experience in the present."
